Welcome to this week’s edition of the WhiteRose Political Calendar. The calendar takes its name from the White Rose, a resistance group in Nazi Germany that worked to educate and organize opposition to the horrifying agenda of the Third Reich.
In the spirit of the White Rose, WPKN offers its weekly Political Calendar in order to give voice to the struggles for political, social, economic and environmental justice.

The Network seeks to improve our urban environment and protect the quality of life of the New Haven community. Our goals are to:

Environmental Justice in the Americas Planning Meeting
at the New Haven/ Leon Sister City Project, 608 Whitney Avenue in New Haven.
Help organize a New Haven based campaign to address environmental and economic injustice in the Americas – from climate change to mining to oil extraction to deforestation; we need to stop trashing the planet and stop dumping on marginalized communities. We are working to develop an action oriented campaign that will involve art, music, nonviolent direct action, a march on October 2nd (Gandhi’s birthday), and push for concrete personal and policy change.

Street Smarts Summer Cycling Celebration

This year’s *Street Smarts Summer Cycling Celebration* will take place in East Rock Park. During the festival, all of the roads in East Rock Park will be closed to motor vehicle traffic, allowing all 425 acres of the park to be made available for a full day of free “all ages” activities – including carnival rides, helmet giveaways, BMX stunt shows, a bicycle scavenger hunt, hiking tours, a break dancing show, street performers, and full access to the trails for leisure biking and walking. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own bikes (and helmets, of course!), although non-cyclists will be able to reach the festivities on East Rock’s summit either by foot or by free shuttle. There will also be a limited number of bikes available to rent. Outdoors lovers, cycling fanatics, and New Haven enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels are invited to enjoy the day’s events! Health Care in Cuba: What We Learned in Eight Days:
Two New Haven health care professionals, Anne Somsel and Christina Santoni, will discuss what they learned about the healthcare system in Cuba during
a recent visit.
The public is invited to learn a bit about how the US embargo has impacted Cuba’s health care system, and how the Cubans have overcome some of those obstacles in providing care to the country’s populations.
The free event is at the New Haven Public Library, 133 Elm St. Free parking is available.
