History Counts: Afghanistan: Graveyard of Empires. The United States 2001 invasion of Afghanistan was the most recent in a long line of invasions going back over 2,000 years. Each invader discovered to his misfortune the same truth: Afghanistan is much easier to invade than to occupy. Our guest is military historian Stephen Tanner, author of Afghanistan: a Military History. Program is archived.
