*Before Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter emerged on the acoustic music scene in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Mary McCaslin was a pioneer with her classic 1970’s recordings for Philo Records with original songs like “Prairie in the Sky,” Young Westley” and “Down The Road.” These songs were covered by artists including Tom Russell, David Bromberg and Stan Rogers. Her music ranges from ballads of the old west to her own songs of the new west and modern times. Also, Mary recorded innovative interpretations of songs by well-known popular music icons like Lennon & McCartney, Pete Townshend and Randy Newman. Add to this her pioneering exploration of open guitar tunings and distinctive vocal styles and you have a portrait of a major figure in American music.
