at 4:30 p.m. Winfred Rembert and Vivian Ducat: Winfred is a New Haven artist who is originally from Georgia. As a young boy in the 1940s and 50s, he missed much of his schooling because he had to join his family in the cotton fields to help earn a meagre living. He became active in the civil rights movement in the early 1960s and narrowly avoided being lynched. Ending up in prison, he learned to tool leather and after moving to Connecticut used this craft to begin making beautifully designed narrative paintings that tell the story of his youth. His life story and the story of his growing fame as an artist are told in a new documentary, “All Me,” which was created by Vivian Ducat. It will be shown in New Haven on June 24th at 3 p.m. as part of the Arts and Ideas Festival.
at 6:00 p.m. Emily Bernard talks about her new book “Carl Van Vechten and the Harlem Renaissance: A Portrait in Black and White.” Van Vechten, a white midwesterner, became an arts critic in New York in the early 20th century and developed a passion for the culture and society of the Harlem Renaissance. As a novelist and later a photographer, he developed deep relationships with such notables as Langston Hughes and Ethel Waters and dozens more. His archives are at Yale.
