White Rose Political Calendar

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Welcome to this week’s edition of the White Rose Political Calendar. The calendar takes its name from the White Rose, a resistance group in Nazi Germany that worked to educate and organize opposition to the horrifying agenda of the Third Reich.

In the spirit of the White Rose, WPKN offers its weekly Political Calendar in order to give voice to the struggles for political, social, economic and environmental justice.

Here are this week’s listings:

On Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 6-7:30 p.m., the New Haven Environmental Justice Network holds its monthly meeting at High School in the Community, 2nd floor media center, 175 Water Street, New Haven. Pizza is provided. It’s free and open to individuals who want to work on the group’s current issues, which include alternative energy, asthma education, pollution from power plants, and more. For more information contact margaret.s.howard@gmail.com.

On Thursday, Feb.  11, from 7-9 p.m., the Women and Family Life Center in Guilford is showing the film, What’s Organic About Organic? It delves into the debates that arise when a grassroots agricultural movement evolves into a booming international market.  The film will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Bill Duesing, Executive Director of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association of Connecticut. The Center is located at 96 Fair Street in Guilford. For more information, including tickets, call 203.458.6699.

On Friday, Feb. 12, it’s the Second Annual No Vet Left Behind Veterans Ball at the Villa Bianca on Route 34 in Seymour, CT.  Come out for an evening of delicious food, a silent auction, and music provided by Mark Lanzieri’s Band. Speakers will address the topic of Women in the Military. Our goal is to raise the money we owe on a house in Naugatuck, which we plan to use as transitional housing for women.  There is also great future potential for this parcel of land due to the large size of the property.  For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact No Vet Left Behind, Inc., at 203.446.2326 or email novetleftbehind@hotmail.com.

On Saturday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., it’s an Open Space gathering on Economy & Livelihood, at Common Ground H.S., 358 Springside Avenue, New Haven. Bring your ideas to this Open Space format gathering. Bring food to share; drinks will be provided. Childcare provided with advance request. For more information and to register, call Bernard Brennan at 203.288.0001 or email   BernardTransition@me.com.

On Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 5-9 p.m., the film, “The Lost Boys of Sudan,” followed by discussion, will take place at the Adanti Student Center, 501 Crescent Street, on the campus of Southern CT State University. It’s free and sponsored by the UN Association of Greater New Haven and the Women’s Studies Program at Southern. For more information, call 203.392.6133.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m., the Elm Street Book Club discusses Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson’s story of his mission to promote peace by building schools in Pakistan. The free event takes place at the New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm St. For more information, call 203.946.8835.
