SAVE THE DATE: The Epic Pledge Drive Brunch Concert
The WPKN Sunday Brunch Concert has hosted many artists, but usually one at a time. On September 12th, we will stretch a bit with three bands on the first Sunday of WPKN’s Fall Pledge Drive. This show also marks the maiden voyage of WPKN’s new performance space.
- 11:00 a.m. Frank Viele and the Manhattan Project (driving horns, funky bass lines, and syncopated rhythms)
- 12:00 noon The Kind Buds (a raucous acoustic guitar jam duo from Vermont)
- 1:00 p.m. Kung Fu (a “lethal funk” supergroup from New Haven)
The concert takes place at the WPKN studio, 244 University Avenue in Bridgeport, CT. Admission is free and everybody is welcome. Listeners are encouraged to call with pledges of support for WPKN. Sunday, September 12 at 11:00 AM.

Beginning Wednesday, September 1 at 6:30 PM:
In Context: Controlled Demolition on 9/11? — In Context, the new live format for History Counts, will mark the approaching anniversary of the 9/11 attack with a series of live call-in programs. Hosts Ken MacDermotRoe and Gus Cantavero, guests and listeners will discuss important aspects of the crime including the theory that the World Trade Center was brought down in a controlled demolition. The programs, all live with call-ins, will be on Wednesday, September 1 at 6:30 -7:00 PM, Sunday, September 5 at 10 -11 PM and Saturday, September 11 at 6:00 – 9:00 AM.
Wednesday September 8 at 6:30 PM:
Tidings from Hazel Kahan: Hazel examines the practice of tipping. She talks to two waiters about their experiences with tipping. Should we tip our favorite radio station? Hazel emphatically says YES.

Bill McKibben, author of more than a dozen books including “The End of Nature,” founder of global warming awareness campaigns, Step It Up and 350.org and scholar in residence at Middlebury College in Vermont. He discusses his latest book, “Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet.”
Prof. Snehal Shingavi, assistant professor of South Asian literature at the University of Texas in Austin, examines the slow pace of U.S. and international assistance for the people of Pakistan devastated by that nation’s historic floods and the related issues of possible man-made causes of the disaster.
Medea Benjamin co-founder of both Code Pink Women for Peace and the international human rights group Global Exchange, talks about the peace movement’s reaction to the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq, the recent escalation of bombings there and the true costs of the war for the Iraqi people.
Justine McCabe, co-chair of the Green Party’s International Committee assesses the election of Green Party candidates in Australia and the role of proportional representation voting there — as well as a brief overview of the GP in the U.S. and around the world.

The 64th Annual Shinnecock Indian Powwow will be held on Labor Day Weekend, Friday September 3 through Monday September 6 at the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. The event includes Arts, Crafts, Native Foods, Drum and Dance Contests. Hours are 3pm to 11pm on Friday, 10 am to 11pm Saturday and Sunday and 10am to 5pm on Monday

An exhibition titiled Mahogany Dew II: More African American Artists in Southampton
will open Saturday, September 18 with a reception from 5 to 7 pm.
at the Rogers Mansion, 17 Meeting House Lane in Southampton.
This exhibit will focus on the work of five living professional artists in Southampton who have made a career in the visual arts. They include Nanette Carter, Pamela Council, Adger W. Cowans, Richard Mayhew and Reynold Ruffins. The opening reception will have a performance by jazz violinist Krystle Ford. Then exhibition will be on view through November 6.

Guild Hall in East Hampton presents the work of Barbara Kruger through October 11:
“In keeping with our longstanding tradition of exhibiting artists of the region, Guild Hall is turning over the entire museum to Barbara Kruger. Kruger will create a site specific installation in the Moran Gallery, a video installation in the Woodhouse Gallery and a selection of paintings and prints from private East End collections will be exhibited in the Spiga Gallery.”

A juried sculpture exhibition is on view at Brecknock Hall, Peconic Landing in Greenport
through September 26. Fourteen artists from all over the country are represented.
