Report to Listener

Steve di Costanzo -
One of my fondest childhood memories was listening to the Top-40 AM station in Milwaukee- WOKY on a little transistor radio when I was a wee lad of 7. Boy did I love that pop coming from the UK… early Beatles, Hollies, Herman’s Hermits, how about Do the Freddy and Catch us if You Can by the Dave Clark 5. Musically, I came of age in the roaring early and mid-70′s. Informed more by crunching rock of David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Grand Funk, James Gang than by the hippie days. But I went on a multi-year quest of reading, collecting, and learning about the Brit Invasion era, Stax & Motown Years, and British psychedelia, and American Garage. I launched RADIO BASE CAMP in November ’07. I’ve been hosting my RADIO BASE CAMP weekly on the greatest listener-supported radio station in the US of A: WPKN 89.5 FM in Bridgeport, CT. I used to own a trade magazine called GOLF RANGE MAGAZINE and the association the GOLF RANGE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA.
I am passionate about music, like all of us out here with stations. Support live music! I lived in NYC for 18 years… caught loads of live acts and spent a lot on vinyl, cassettes, and then CD’s. My musical eyes and ears over the years have been great radio stations like WPKN in Bridgeport, CT (great!), WFUV in NYC, KCRW in Santa Monica, EVR in the East Village, WFMU and press like the NME, The Big Takeover,CMJ, MOJO and UNCUT, Time Out and others…. I used to DJ in D.C. while in college during the Punk/New Wave/Ska era. Had loads of fun doing it. Worked at The Bayou as a student in Georgetown which was a great venue to see bands coming through DC. Have fond memories of early 9:30 Club gigs there as well. So many great clubs over the years in NYC… CBGB, The Pyramid Club, Arlene Grocery, Max’s, Danceteria, Irving Plaza, SOB’s, and let’s not forget Maxwell’s in Hoboken (RIP after August 1, 2013).
Radio Base Camp is heavy on psych, garage, indie, funk&soul, afrobeat, and world sounds from Jamaica to Morocco. I have a strong sense of playing some of the great cult and underground bands… and making sure the old underground bands have their moments too.
Since July 2012 I’ve been honored to be the General Manager here at WPKN. I love this place and all that it stands for. When we say WPKN is the REAL ALTERNATIVE we really mean it. Tell a friend to tune us in.
