Calling drummers! WPKN 89.5-FM is partnering with Drum Circle Leader and Community Builder Billy Fischer from Bethany, CT www.billthedancecaller.com to launch their new project, IMPACT (Imagine Mixing Percussive Artforms CT), at the historic Arcade in Bridgeport on Saturday, February 22nd from 12:30 to 2PM.
“The purpose of IMPACT is to showcase the wealth of ethnic drum styles that we have around our state.” said Fischer. “It only seems logical to launch the project in WPKN’s backyard, given the station’s history of programming a wide range of ethnic music.”
WPKN General Manager, Steve di Costanzo, said, “Both Billy and WPKN have partnered with CreateHereNow www.createherenow.org and been inspired by their statewide events, and the idea of IMPACT developed between us over lunch at the Corporate Deli in Bridgeport one day. Billy leads drum circles in CT and has a vision of taking IMPACT performances to CreateHereNow Alliance Communities like New Britain, Middletown, and New London to engage and draw upon their ethnic drumming groups. These local events will herald a culminating event, a mega drum circle/percussive symphony in Hartford’s Bushnell Park in September. This is just the sort of project that WPKN nurtures in our own community. In fact, WPKN’s Terry Hopper has been holding his own drum circle events for more than a decade and we’re happy to have Terry as a point person for WPKN as well. WPKN can program live performance coverage of each event to help raise awareness of what can become an authentic Connecticut event. And why not launch it in Bridgeport’s Historic Arcade, a fabulously unique space for something of this scale?”
The Bridgeport DSSD’s Mike Moore, Pryceless Consulting’s Natalie Pryce and CreateHereNow Bridgeport have launched “Arcade Storefronts Saturdays” http://www.arcademallbpt.com/ , a plan for the ongoing activation of the arcade while raising public awareness of the unique shops that now occupy both floors.
“February 22 in the Bridgeport Arcade is going to be a high-energy drum circle featuring many types of drummers and welcoming audience participation.” said Fischer. “We also welcome and encourage participation by belly dancers, hula hoopers and jugglers.”
